Separation, understood not as a limitation but as a possibility for continuous relational movements between people and things that desire each other although they are different, is an idea that opens up vast possibilities.

The certainty of separation – the principle of individualisation of each thing – is not so clear in the era of globalisation. Intense and generalised transactions in all fields, from commerce to knowledge, characterise this time of great uncertainty that we attempt to inhabit. A time of intense and rapid transformations, in which some distances are conquered so quickly that it creates the illusion that some things are all the same. But they aren’t.

In 2017, inspired by the binomial Transactions/Transformations, we ask ourselves what ideas, means, and goods – what concept of the world and of development – have actually been globalised. Is knowledge conjugated and disseminated in all of its diversity? What role do cultural policies play in this field, and what degree of independence do they have vis-à-vis the market and the consensus around a certain idea of access? How have the modes of collaboration between artists and programmers changed, and what effects have these transformations had on the cultural life of different communities? What do artists, with their singular perspectives, have to say about this world in accelerated movement? What say the audiences, with their fond hope of seeing in the dark?

Since 2009, Festival Materiais Diversos has affirmed itself as a meeting place that brings together unconnected points and proposes new patterns of relationing to the arts in Minde, Alcanena, Cartaxo, and until 2016, Torres Novas. In 2017, we are more conscious of the independence of spirit that should characterise the work of programming, and also of the necessary reciprocity in the partnerships we build, without which there is no reason or support to travel certain distances.

As a festival centred in a periphery, our intention is not to colonise communities with what comes from a centre, but to contribute to the creation of new centres, where new ways of doing and thinking can emerge. Programming/creating/seeing in the theatre is not the same as programming/creating/seeing in the factory; nor is programming/creating/seeing in Minde the same as programming/creating/seeing in Lisbon, or in Brussels, or in Cairo, or in Santiago de Chile.

In this year’s selection, the work of artistic duos, collectives, and pieces for/with groups stands out, but what really predominates is a desire to address the audience member in each of us and question the places (from) where we see the performances. Separated by the temporary and interchangeable condition of seeing or doing, we meet in the hope of sharing an imagined world, between ententes and differences, to transform, in both ways and in new directions.

To all who embody and give meaning to this festival, welcome!

These words have been inscribed in my memory for almost 20 years, and they continue to echo with meaning.
